CATALYST SHOOT: REBECCA RIOS
So, for those of us not lucky enough to have met you yet, tell us a little about yourself.
I’m 18 years old, I have been with InHerShoes for over a year now, I first started as a high school intern and now I am a Jr. Partnership Administrator! I am currently going to Cal State LA, although I am a little bit indecisive over my major, I love the sciences and I love the arts.
The Catalyst Shoot was a unique experience where we highlighted incredible women and an object that reflected how they #CatalyzeCourage. What was your object and why?
My object is a rag. Although its just a piece of fabric, these rags symbolize so much more. I have been going to a camp since I was 7 years old and in this camp we have the chance to undergo a "ragger’s creed", which means you undergo an oath with duties to illicit change in yourself. Each rag color specifies a different value such as family, friends, self and environment. You set goals for yourself for each rag, and as you feel you accomplished the goals in one value, you move on to the next. I took the challenge that came with each rag and I grew 1% more courageous each day in my work, goals, friendships, and overall my self.
What does “catalyze courage” mean to you?
Every time I think of the phrase “catalyze courage” I think of a pep rally. A massive pep rally; and to me, that is exactly what it is. It's being courageous as one, and inspiring a whole group around you to be courageous. It's like a big roaring group of powerful women giving each other advice, encouragement and resources to be more courageous.
What would you tell your 17 year old self?
Well I wasn’t 17 too long ago haha, but a year has given me so many opportunities and chances to grow. I would say to not worry too much, things never go as planned but they always figure themselves out. I would definitely be a less stressed teenager!
What’s one “give” you can offer up to the InHerShoes community reading this?
Something I could give the InHerShoes community is being a listening ear and relating to what you are going through. Much of InHerShoes's community are teenagers or young women in college that are constantly changing - what they like, their views, their majors, their crushes! I am about to complete my 1st year of college and I am the youngest member of the InHerShoes team, so I definitely can relate to and represent the younger voices of the InHerShoes community. If you're reading this and ever want to connect, please reach out!
What’s one “ask” you have of the InHerShoes community?
I ask that the InHerShoes community be more involved! I have been with InHerShoes and our growing team for a little over a year and I have seen major growth and involvement that makes me so excited and proud to be part of this. In an ideal world I would like to meet all of our community members across the world through our events and the Catalyze Courage Summit!
What would you do if you were 1% more courageous?
If I was 1% more courageous I would start my own clothing line! Although I'm not the greatest at sewing, designing and styling is one of my favorite things to do. I would pick up fashion as a minor, take a couple of sewing classes and start a blog!
You're amazing! How can I connect with you?
I’m a pretty avid snap story poster and I'm just getting into Insta Stories! Both of my handles are rebeccariosss and for more personal inquires, you can email me here.
BONUS! What would you create if money was not a concern?
I would move everywhere, even if its for a week, a month or a year! Living in other places gives you cultural experience but also makes you learn more about yourself!
