Keys to Courage
By Amy Perkins |Rocklin, CA
Most of my life, I avoided failure at all costs. By most standards I was fairly successful, but I played it safe, very safe.
At 21, I started teaching. Finished my master’s degree, bought my own house in my mid 20’s, got married at 27, and became a mom at 30.
In 2016, my world was rocked. My best friend from college died. She lost her life after a grueling battle with ovarian cancer. Even more heartbreaking, she left behind a precious two year old son.
"Going through the motions of life wasn't an option for me anymore."
This woke me up. Going through the motions of life wasn’t an option for me anymore. I wanted a career that made an impact and left a legacy. I had a BURNING desire to make that happen, to live a remarkable life, while honoring my dear friend who lost hers way too soon.
Along that path, I discovered Mel Robbins. She’s the bestselling author of The 5 Second Rule, and the number one booked female speaker in the world. Her TED Talk has over 15 million views. The 5 Second Rule got me out of my own way, got me taking action and propelled me to do things outside of my comfort zone. I started creating the life of my dreams.
There was no question I was going to meet Mel. Just a few months after discovering her book, I found myself on stage at Creative Live in San Francisco, getting one on one coaching. It was live-streamed worldwide. Since then, I’ve met her four times.
"So I did something terrifying."
Her work had a profound effect on me. I was determined to work for her, to join her team. They needed me. What better addition to your staff than a raving fan who has utilized your product to transform their own life? So I did something terrifying. I asked her for a job, on Facebook LIVE (my first one ever) in a group of 2,000 people. Here’s a video about that experience...
I'm a few months out from that terrifying video, and my entire life has transformed. I’m sharing my own story and message, just like Mel told me to do. The videos and posts I share on multiple platforms such as LinkedIn, YouTube and Instagram get up to 65,000 views a day. I get emails and DM’s from people all over the world who subscribe to my newsletter thanking me for sharing my story. Thanking me for helping them change their lives. Now, I can’t imagine working for Mel’s team. That was not my path at all.
Sometimes our perceived failures, like me not getting hired, aren’t failures at all. They are merely the universe redirecting us to something bigger, something better.
Taking action, especially huge terrifying action, gives you clarity.
It’s true what they say - everything you ever wanted is waiting on the other side of fear.
